We are proud to support responsible initiatives that minimize our impact on the environment and help create sustainable communities. We work hard to achieve this goal through conservation efforts, affiliations with organizations committed to developing sustainable communities, and fostering a culture of responsibility among our employees.
Our conservation programs are designed to minimize operational waste and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Among the many programs in place at Unum include a recently launched ride-share initiative for employees, extensive virtual meeting capabilities, growing recycling programs, energy-efficient building upgrades and a lessening reliance on paper due to electronic document processing and storage.
Although there are a number of environmental programs in place at Unum, we are constantly looking at ways to enhance our sustainability endeavors. Backed by the passion of our employees for environmental responsibility, we are developing tactics that will establish carbon reduction objectives, pursue energy credits and continue reducing the amount of trash sent to landfills.
Carbon footprint
In 2008 our Unum UK division implemented an environmental policy and started measuring our carbon footprint. We also continued our involvement with both the ABI ClimateWise and BitC May Day Network initiatives. In 2009 our Carbon Management Programme, focusing on energy and transportation issues, continued to look at how to reduce and offset our carbon burden.
Going green
Unum is demonstrating its commitment to the environment in many ways. During a two-year period, the company recycled 4.3 million pounds of paper. We also eliminate more than 35 million pages of printed material by switching to electronic delivery of documents internally and externally
Green affiliations
Unum is affiliated with the U.S. Green Building Council and the Carbon Management Council, both of which are committed to limiting the impact we all have on the environment.
