Unum is committed to helping people with disabilities reach their full potential. It’s a long-standing promise reflected in the company’s products and services as well as its support of organizations that serve people of all abilities.
Giving Everybody A Chance
Employees at the Bristol campus of Unum UK illustrated the company’s commitment by helping the Avon Riding Centre, which provides riding tuition and therapy to adults and children with disabilities. Bristol employees also supported the Vassal Centre Trust, a nonprofit organization that advocates for accessible places to work as well as employment and volunteer opportunities for people with disabilities.
Unum UK has taken an active role in disability advocacy through its membership of the national government’s Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation as well as the Employer’s Forum on Disability. On a local level, the company provided financial assistance to about 100 charities serving people with disabilities.
And each year since 2006, volunteers in Chattanooga have teamed up with the Chattanooga Zoo to host Dream Night — a chance for families with children who have physical and developmental disabilities to visit the zoo for free after hours without the crowds that regular zoo hours bring.
Going The Distance To Make A Difference
At Unum Ireland, the company sponsored the campus’s first-ever charity event, a 10,000-meter walk/run that raised more than €6,400 for two charities in Carlow. The first, the Delta Center, provides care for adults with learning disabilities, and the second, Saplings, offers education to children with autism.
Teaching Kids Of All Abilities
As highlighted “Kids on the Block” story (right), the “Kids Like You, Kids Like Me” exhibit gave children in Chattanooga and Portland a unique opportunity to experience what it’s like to have a disability. Unum partnered with local children’s museums and other nonprofit organizations to provide the exhibit, which is designed to raise awareness of various disabilities among children. Employees volunteered their time to help conduct simulations for the children.
